What Makes You Sing?

What is it about a song that makes you want to sing it?
Help me out here. As a songwriter, I'd like to know what it is in a song that captures your attention. Is it an image in your mind... the rhythm... melody... particular sounds?

Please comment and give me your thoughts. Thanks!

one line, one good lyric, one magical melody over a chord progression that journeys somewhere. for me right now its United Live, Came to my Rescue - "in my life, be lifted high, in my world, be lifted high...". magic!

In worship? Honest, non cliche lyrics that dont talk about 'I', but focus on the nature of our God and who He is and what He has done, not what I am doing. The use of the word 'we', instead of 'I' makes a huge difference for me in corporate worship. Some of the old hymns have it right, thats why they stay around so long. My opinion anyways!

howdie MC. ah songwriting. for me personally . clever use of words that makes you think but that you sing to with ease/memorable. one of my favs; "a prayer in time of distress, my sheets are wet, my eyes are flooded", and "my heart and soul have been on their feet all night" (from the song prayer of time of distress, drew griiffith) .. jack johnson comes up with some clever lines himself too. thought thru music. ie one can tell work has been done on something that started out as "such" and by the end of the song, although superficialy it is the same, its actually different. ah yes then this me. and i listen and hear songs very differently. (i am one of those cant stand pop stuff and cliche cords that you head so often, i dont mind simple stuff, but if just regurgitated then the words/lyric have to work it, ... pop stuff boring, not enough food for thought - nice to listen 1st, 2nd time, but then what? i love songs to listen to over and over again to make me think about life and make the words my words to sing to the world... not just to sing along because it is easy to, but because i want to own them myself to sing from the heart) ... i better stop here before i write my essay ... ;P peace out! Mika

ah, what an awesome question... i have to say it's united live for me at the moment as well. the guitar solo in "all for love", simple but melodic in that way that makes you think you're flying...

and on the previous united album: "and i'll stand with arms high and heart abandoned, in awe of the one who gave it all...". it's such a visual lyric and gives me goosebumps just thinking about it...

and right now i can't get over the guitar solo in "comfortably numb" (pink floyd)...

it's the melody that gets me first, then if the lyrics grab me i will find myself singing along....in worship though i reckon i wanna hear honesty more than cliche.....'all i need'....'more than life'...'you alone'....great sentiments but do we mean it??

Catchy Melody with LOTS of hooks!
Mighty to Save is great at this!
Just so hooky and makes you want to SHOUT!
The simple truth that Reuben uses in his songs catch my ear.

But with the secular stuff...
John mayer's new album is great. Waiting on the world to change, gravity, vultures are all great songs which have hooky riffs and melodies. Keane's Is it any Wonder is also very catchy and you can't help but sing or hum along, becuase of such a well developed melody.

Love ya bro,
Hope your doing well,

Zac

the b00f™ would say that whatever it is that U2 and Coldplay do with their music and or writing is a good start. Delirious, Midnight Oil, Tim Hughes, Gorillaz and even Queen get the b00f™ singing along... I want to ride my bicycle I want to ride my bike...

rob - you have trouble singing the line "all day, all day yeah, all day" as a true heartfelt sentiment?

silence makes me want to sing.. not that i want to fill it, i'm not scared of it. there is something about silence that speaks to me. the granduer and the bigness of the sky, every breathe is a wonder and it stills me enough to listen to the heart of God.

so maybe it's his heart that makes me sing. i think i just found out that singing is a total response for me! thanks mark! :)
